Editorial Review for Lantern Grill – by Maura York
The Scene
An upscale departure from South Padre's seafood shacks, the elegant Lantern Grill is Mediterranean-inspired, featuring light pink stucco outside and exposed brick and murals inside. Soft jazz (live on weekends), accommodating table-spacing and professional service further refine the atmosphere, appreciated mostly by couples and older families.
The Food
The appetizer list alone comprises a dozen mouthwatering selections; the crabmeat stack with smoldering roasted corn and tomatoes and contrasting avocado and black beans is an excellent choice. Entrees are equally plentiful and anticipation-inducing. Shrimp chardonnay butter sauce elevates sauteed red snapper to near perfect, as do apple-raspberry chutney and jalapeno-cheddar grits for the grilled pork chop. Tortilla-crusted chicken is a house specialty and a must for poultry fans. The mastery continues through imaginative desserts, including a transcendent chocolate bread pudding with Wild Turkey caramel sauce.
